My Burnout Story
It was August 2021 and I was working as an IT Manager for an investment/stockbroking firm. I had worked there for 20 years.
Things were crazy busy with a workload that just kept increasing all the time as more compliance and IT regulations were implemented, security and desktop changes, constant business acquisitions, as the demands on my small team mounted up.
I found I was thinking of all the things that were not getting done, and I was not sleeping due to worrying all the time.
The pandemic had taken an even bigger toll, the IT demands of the past year and a half having to support users when they worked from home.
My wife’s parents were very ill and she had to spend months away in Ireland, leaving me to juggle this crazy job and look after our children.
I knew I was not dealing with things well.
One day, I was on a phone call, and I just lost it, I felt as though I had blacked out for a few seconds. I removed my headset and walked out of the office which was completely out of character for me.
What I didn’t realise at the time was that I had reached severe “burnout”.
Two days later I went back into the office, my boss and HR assured me things would be sorted out. They removed some responsibility from me but there was still an enormous workload that still fell on my lap.
Whilst I continued with my job, something had drastically changed inside me.
I no longer cared about my job at all, in fact I didn’t care about myself either.
I kept hoping the old me would come back, but inside I was just dead and not getting any better.
Then my mother-in-law and father-in-law (who had been my family for most of my life) both passed away within a few months of each other.
In this same year I was constantly ill with colds, my back was terrible and I spent a lot of time bedridden.
In the midst of this I came down with the shingles virus which was quite frankly the worst pain I’ve known!
My body was closing down.
Stomach aches, back aches, headaches, chest burning, dizziness and high anxiety levels which I have never experienced before…I was in the worst possible place mentally and physically. So in December 2022 I met with my boss.
The past couple of years of bottling up how I felt, came flooding out. I was in tears and a total mess (completely not like me!) The HR person was called in and they accepted my resignation.
After Christmas, I decided to get some help. I began researching my feelings and came across the syndrome referred to as “burnout”.
The more I read about this the more I said “this is me, this is exactly how I am feeling!”
I began working with a professional “burnout therapist" who confirmed that I was an extreme case.
The therapist had told me that in order to get better, I could not go back to work.
I was set a number of mindful exercises to do daily, or as many times as I felt necessary. To start with I did both these exercises about three times a day.
I spent a lot of time sleeping. They say burnout is a trauma and in order to get over it, you have to let your body do what it's telling you to do.
But whilst I was sleeping a lot, I also started to paint every day.
I began to master the technique of “fluid art making”, every day I set myself something different to make.
The fluid art technique involves a three-layer process starting with a base layer of pillow paint, followed by coloured paints, and topped with a cell activator to create cells and effects through methods like swiping or blowing.
The artwork's final appearance, featuring vibrant cells and shapes, is achieved by stretching the base paint over the canvas, a process adaptable to artwork size through tools like cake or paint spinners or manual tilting.
Even the days when I often had to drag myself out of bed, I knew once I started painting, that it would be the most beneficial thing I could do.
I continued to see the burnout therapist. Each time I saw him he told me he could see an improvement.
How do I feel now?
I’m now energised and excited about what the future holds.
The way I look at my artwork also has a different perspective because of this experience. I want people who collect my art to be taken to another place or world in their lives.
If you are feeling overwhelmed, take a look at one of my art pieces, follow the flow of the colours and the cells, what do you see?
Art is well known as a useful healer. If someone can relate to this and it makes them feel better, then I feel like I have achieved what I set out to do: convert my Burnout journey into something useful for others.

Why am I giving away my art?
That's a great question. What's the catch? Well here are three reasons:
#1) I believe that art makes a difference in the quality of people's lives. Surrounding yourself by things that you see as beautiful or have meaning for you enhances your daily life.
#2) I feel that the connection between artists and the public sometimes gets obscured by Middle Men. This promotional offer allows me to be directly in contact with collectors of art, which feels more potent than having to have other people in the pipeline as it were.
#3) Who better to be a potential collector of a new, original piece from me than someone who already has a print of my work hanging on their wall? Although there is certainly no pressure to do so, someday you might want a larger piece or you may even want me to make something expressly for you.
So those are my reasons! No catch really, just experimenting with different ways to reach people with art.
